Pioneer DEH-P5200HD Review by Zorko (Burbank, CA USA)
I bought this head unit so I could play my iPod through my car speakers in my 2004 Chevy Aveo. I had originally had an FM transmitter, which did not work for me. This system suits my purposes, but I am not completely happy with it.
The Good:
Plays Audio CD's fine. Syncs and charges my iPod. Allows me to control my iPod using the stereo's controls. Sounds good. Easy to install. Can't beat the price.
The Bad:
The big "multipurpose" knob/button/joystick...has too many purposes. In fact, it's a big pain in the ass. Using it as an "enter"/"select" button in iPod mode is the worst part--especially while you're driving. If you don't press it perfectly, squarely in the middle, it will end up functioning instead as a joystick, navigating you to where you don't want to go within your iPod. When you have to scroll through hundreds of artists, albums, songs, etc. to find what you want to hear; this gets unbearably frustrating and annoying. Using the included remote control as an alternative is not a reasonable option either.
The other buttons on the unit aren't marked coherently. You pretty much have to figure out for yourself what each button does.
The remote control isn't very useful in iPod mode. If you were to use the up/down arrows to scroll through all your songs, it would take too long. It's easier just to reach over to the stereo anyway.
There is the option to use your iPod's controls instead, but this option isn't compatible with every iPod. I have a Gen 5.5 iPod (iPod video), which is not compatible with this option.
The Ugly:
The "HD Radio" feature is more gimmicky than it is useful. Sure, it sounds better than regular radio, but it cuts in and out of "HD mode," which quickly gets annoying and detracts from the overall listening experience.
Conclusion:
For the price, this is a good, versatile car stereo with a poor control scheme. If you're looking for a head unit to sync with your iPod, you may want to consider other options before you buy this unit.

I have never been disappointed in Pioneer and I definitely wasn't with this purchase. This CD Deck looks great in my grand prix, it has a very slick look to it. Of course it's not all about looks. It has a lot of good features to it in my opinion. I can't really tell a difference in regular radio to the HD but either way it sounds clear with my stock speakers. I like how I can hook my ipod up directly through the USB port or through the auxiliary port on the front. Some of the reviews claimed it was hard to operate at first and the main volume buttons (which is pretty much the main button used for all the settings) was challenging to use. In my opinion it was fairly easy to learn the controls, some things I did have to look up in the manual but that goes for a lot of products you purchase. Overall I am very happy with this CD deck especially for the price I got it for.

After about a week with this installed, I'm fairly impressed with the quality of my new stereo. While a little difficult to navigate options at first, you soon get the hang of where things are and how to get there. Here's a tip. Don't try and figure out how to use it while driving. Setting and navigating to presets for radio stations is really easy (which was a must for me) and when the HD kicks in for a particular station, it sounds amazing. Just the other day I turned on the car and my girlfriend asked me if we were listening to a CD or the radio.
The only problem I have is not being able to quickly change audio levels on the fly (like bass, treble, balance, etc.) because they require a bit of navigation to get to. If you listen to CD's, this probably won't be much of an issue as you'll set it once for the disc and can forget about it. But it can get a little annoying when you're music comes in different genres and levels of quality at random (like it would on shuffle with an iPod or iPhone). I will say that overall, my music sounds much better through this deck than the stock one for my 2001 Honda. Can't see how it can get much better than this in terms of style and available features for the price.
